GR®736 Tarn Valley and Gorges

From Villefort (Lozere) to Albi (Tarn)

The Gorges du Tarn are a remarkable natural site located in the Lozere and Aveyron regions. During the Middle Ages, the gorges saw the rise of picturesque villages, such as Sainte-Enimie, which retain a rich architectural heritage, including Romanesque churches and stone houses. There are many classified villages, historic bridges, and archaeological sites in the area. The gorges are part of the Cevennes National Park. The flora varies from oak and boxwood in the drier areas to aquatic species and wet meadows along the Tarn River. There are also rare species, such as the thuja juniper and various orchids. The fauna is equally rich, featuring birds like the griffon vulture and the bearded vulture, as well as mammals such as deer and wild boar.
