GR®736 Tarn Valley and GorgesFrom Villefort (Lozere) to Albi (Tarn) |
The GR736 trail begins in the foothills of Mont Lozère and leads to Pont-de-Montvert, a key site in the history of the Camisards. Descending towards Florac, home to the Cévennes National Park, the landscape transforms: the dark schist gives way to the vertiginous limestone cliffs of the Tarn Gorges. This deep canyon reveals a fascinating troglodytic heritage and medieval villages clinging to the rock face. The trail passes through Millau, famous for its modern viaduct, a striking contrast to the ancient glove-making heritage. The river then calms in the Raspes du Tarn, winding its way towards Brousse-le-Château, one of the most beautiful villages in France, where the stone architecture testifies to Occitan feudal power. The journey culminates in Albi, the "purple city," whose fortified brick cathedral proudly overlooks the end of this wild trek.
