Loop around Levezou Mountains (Aveyron) |
The Monts du Lévézou refers to the vast granite and schist plateau located in the heart of the Aveyron department (Occitanie region), rising to between 700 and 1100 meters in altitude. This mid-mountain region is characterized by a strong climatic influence and open landscapes dotted with heathland, beech forests, and pastures. The Lévézou is famous for its five large artificial lakes, created by EDF for hydroelectric power, including Lake Pareloup, which dominate the local economy and tourism. The plateau acts as a natural water tower and is a center for the production of high-quality cheese. Local heritage is marked by traditional houses, wayside crosses, and the remains of old mills. The Grand Tour of the Lévézou is a long-distance hiking trail that allows hikers to discover all the lakes and peaks, offering panoramic views of the Aubrac and Causses regions.
