Sumene Artense is a mountainous region located in the heart of the Massif Central. The territory is marked by rugged terrain, with peaks reaching an altitude of more than 1,500 meters. The landscapes are dominated by beech, fir and oak forests. There are also numerous lakes and rivers, including Lake Saint-Étienne-Cantalès, the largest lake in the region. The history of Sumène Artense dates back to Gallo-Roman times. The region was then inhabited by the Arverni, a Celtic people. In the Middle Ages, Sumène Artense was divided into several lordships, the most important of which were those of Saignes, Champs-sur-Tarentaine and Lanobre.
