The Montaigne Trail follows a part of the historical routes taken by the philosopher Michel de Montaigne, who was born in Périgueux on February 28, 1533, in the Aquitaine region but traveled through various regions of France. Michel de Montaigne is an emblematic figure of the Renaissance whose ideas on humanism, individualism, and cultural relativism have left a lasting impact on Western thought. The GR®89 thus embodies a rich intellectual and cultural history, crossing significant sites that evoke the Renaissance and humanist ideas. Along the way, hikers discover numerous castles, churches, and picturesque villages, which are witnesses to a fascinating architectural past.
