GR®440 Around Limousine mountain (Correze, Haute-Vienne, Creuse) |
The GR440 long-distance hiking trail crosses the high granite plateaus of the Millevaches Regional Natural Park, nicknamed "the water tower of France." Its name doesn't come from cattle, but from the Celtic word *vacca*, meaning "spring," illustrating the abundance of peat bogs and the rivers that originate there, such as the Vienne and the Vézère. The heritage is understated yet authentic: you'll find Romanesque churches built of gray granite, devotional fountains, medieval wooden bridges, and isolated old farmhouses. As for the landscapes, hikers traverse a French "Little Scotland," alternating between heathland, mysterious peat bogs, and dense deciduous and coniferous forests. Nature reigns supreme: water is everywhere, from the springs of the Vienne to the Gimel waterfalls. The panoramas from Mont Bessou or Puy de la Monédière offer breathtaking views of the Massif Central.
