Starting from Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, the trail first crosses the spectacular Colorado Provençal at Rustrel, where vibrant ochre hues contrast with the green of the pines, before reaching the wild Oppedette canyon. Descending onto the southern slope, hikers discover charming villages like Lourmarin, with its Renaissance castle, and the flower-filled lanes of Cucuron. Heritage unfolds at every turn, from dry-stone bories (dry-stone huts) to elegant bastides nestled in olive groves. The Mediterranean nature expresses itself here through the scent of thyme and lavender, particularly on the ridges offering breathtaking views all the way to the Alps. Heading north through the old town of Oppède and the monumental springs of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the route reaches its climax in Gordes, an iconic hilltop village, and Roussillon, famous for its cliffs of blood and gold.

The Luberon is divided into two parts: the Petit Luberon and the Grand Luberon. The Petit Luberon is smaller and more rugged than the Grand Luberon. It is made up of limestone rocks that give its landscapes white and ochre colors. The Grand Luberon is larger and more gentle than the Petit Luberon. It is made up of limestone, slate, and sandstone rocks. The Luberon is home to a rich historical heritage, with medieval villages, castles, abbeys, and chapels. Among the most picturesque villages are Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, and Bonnieux. The most famous castles are the Château de Lacoste, the Château de Buoux, and the Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde. The most important abbeys are the Sénanque Abbey and the Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand Abbey.
