Luberon is divided into two parts: the Petit Luberon and the Grand Luberon. The Petit Luberon is smaller and more rugged than the Grand Luberon. It is made up of limestone rocks that give its landscapes white and ochre colors. The Grand Luberon is larger and more gentle than the Petit Luberon. It is made up of limestone, slate, and sandstone rocks. Le Luberon is home to a rich historical heritage, with medieval villages, castles, abbeys, and chapels. Among the most picturesque villages are Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes, and Bonnieux. The most famous castles are the Château de Lacoste, the Château de Buoux, and the Château de Simiane-la-Rotonde. The most important abbeys are the Senanque Abbey and the Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand Abbey.
