The GR®5G is a distinctive trail that connects with the famous GR®5 in Metz. Its uniqueness lies in its intriguing history. As you traverse this trail, you will notice the customary red and white markers of long-distance hiking routes. However, a delightful surprise awaits in the form of the iconic scallop shell, a symbol synonymous with the paths leading to Compostela. Spanning a distance of 100 kilometres, this trail bisects the Moselle department from east to west. It is divided into five stages, each offering a glimpse into a rich historical tapestry that includes the department's own heritage. From Hérapel, a hill that has been a cradle of civilisation for 200,000 years, to the poignant reminders of 20th-century conflicts such as the Heights of Spicheren and the Bambesch structure of the Maginot Line, the trail is a living testament to every epoch of history. Indeed, no historical period is overlooked on this remarkable journey.
