GR®5GFrom Saarbrücken (Germany) to Metz (Moselle) |
|
The GR®5G stands as a distinct trail that forges a connection with the famed GR®5 in Metz. Its uniqueness lies in its intriguing history. As you traverse this trail, you’ll notice the customary red and white markers indicative of long-distance hiking trails. However, a delightful surprise awaits in the form of the iconic scallop shell, a symbol synonymous with the paths leading to Compostela. Spanning a distance of 100 kilometers, this trail bisects the Moselle department from the east to the west. It’s segmented into five stages, each offering a glimpse into its rich historical tapestry, inclusive of the department’s own heritage. From Hérapel, a hill that has been a cradle of civilization for 200,000 years, to the poignant reminders of 20th-century conflicts such as the Heights of Spicheren and the Bambesch structure of the Maginot line, the trail is a living testament to all epochs of history. Indeed, no historical period is overlooked on this remarkable journey.
