Tour of the Fiefs of Pouzauges (Vendée) |
Located in the heart of the Vendée's Upper Bocage region, the trail begins in Pouzauges, a medieval town dominated by its 12th-century keep and windmills perched on the heights of the Bois de la Folie forest. It then winds its way towards Montournais and Réaumur, where the Manoir des Sciences (Manor of Sciences) pays homage to the illustrious 18th-century scientist in a bucolic setting. Passing through La Meilleraie-Tillay, the hiker follows the peaceful banks of the Grand Lay river, discovering a small rural heritage of wayside crosses and old houses nestled in the greenery. The landscape unfolds between hills and steep-sided valleys, revealing a preserved natural environment where pollarded oak hedges form a typical bocage pattern. The stop at Le Boupère is striking for its fortified church, a testament to the turmoil of the Wars of Religion that profoundly marked this granite region.
The Pouzauges Fiefs are a region rich in arts and culture. There are numerous castles, churches and museums which house art and history collections. In the Middle Ages, the Fiefs were a region of lordships and castles. There is notably the Chateau de Pouzauges, which is an important historical monument. In the 17th century, the Fiefs were affected by religious wars. Protestants, who are the majority in the region, are persecuted by Catholics. They take refuge in the forests and hills of the Fiefs, where they build camps and fortifications. In the 18th century, the Fiefs experienced a period of prosperity. The region is then known for its vineyards, which produce renowned wine.
