The Pays Nantais has been inhabited by Celts, Romans, Vikings, and Franks. In the Middle Ages, Nantes was an important city in the Duchy of Brittany. It was a major commercial and cultural center. In the 16th century, Nantes became a prosperous city thanks to the trade in sugar and coffee. The environment of the Pays Nantais is varied. It includes plains, hills, valleys, and marshes. The Loire, the longest river in France, flows through the country. The traditional language of the Pays Nantais is Gallo, a dialect of French. Breton is also spoken in some regions.
