Tour of the Sarce and Hozain Valleys (Aube) |
Starting in Bar-sur-Seine, the trail first crosses the Champagne hillsides of Avirey-Lingey and Bagneux-la-Fosse, where the vineyards create a landscape of rolling green hills. Heading towards Bragelogne-Beauvoir and Maisons-lès-Chaource, the landscape becomes more wooded, offering a cool refuge and preserved biodiversity. The unmissable stop in Chaource reveals a historical treasure with its Church of Saint John the Baptist, home to the famous "Entombment of Christ," a masterpiece of 16th-century Troyes sculpture. The route continues to the Manoir des Tourelles in Rumilly-lès-Vaudes, a superb example of Renaissance architecture in a rural setting. Following the meanders of the Hozain River via Virey-sous-Bar and Bourguignons, hikers discover a small local heritage of wash houses and old stone bridges.
The Sarce and Hozain Valleys are a preserved natural environment. The region is mainly covered in forests, fields and villages. The Othe forest is a protected natural area. It is classified as a national nature reserve. The forest is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species, some of which are rare or endangered. The valleys are also an important place of passage for migratory birds. In the 19th century, the region experienced a period of prosperity due to the development of the textile industry. Many factories were built in the valleys, notably in Bar-sur-Seine, the main town of the region.
