Gaston Bachelard was a French philosopher of science, poetry, education, and time. He was born in Bar-sur-Aube in 1884 and died in Paris in 1962. Bachelard was one of the founders of the new French epistemology. He was interested in how scientific knowledge is constructed and transformed over time. He notably introduced the concept of the epistemological obstacle, which refers to prejudices and preconceptions that can prevent the progress of scientific knowledge. Bachelard also wrote on poetry, education, and time. He notably developed a conception of poetry as a way to transcend the limits of scientific knowledge. He also reflected on how education can help students develop a critical scientific mind. Bachelard's work has had a significant influence on the philosophy of science, education, and psychoanalysis.
