Tour of Courbet Country (Doubs)

Randonnée autour du Pays de Courbet (Doubs)

Starting in Ornans, the birthplace of painter Gustave Courbet, this hike along the Loue and Lison rivers explores the rugged landscapes that inspired Realism. The trail follows the Loue Valley, passing through the charming towns of Vuillafans and Lods, before reaching Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, famous for its spectacular gorges. Climbing towards Ouhans, you'll discover the source of the Loue, gushing from a rock face. The route then descends to the Bolandoz plateau and the summit of Montmahoux, offering a unique panoramic view of the Jura mountains. The natural heritage is further revealed at Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne, where the source of the Lison emerges in the heart of a cirque of wooded cliffs. Passing through Éternoz and its waterfall, the path winds through a dramatic landscape of limestone and dense forests. The return to the Loue valley is via Cléron, whose medieval castle is reflected in the clear waters, and Scey-Maisières, a land of legends.

Around Pays de Courbet (Doubs)

A leading figure of Realism, Gustave Courbet revolutionized 19th-century painting by rejecting idealism to celebrate raw truth. Deeply attached to his native land, the Loue Valley in the Doubs region, he made the Franche-Comté countryside his open-air studio. His landscapes, often painted with a palette knife, capture the materiality of limestone rocks, the density of fir forests, and the freshness of springs like the Loue River. His work, including the famous A Burial at Ornans, anchors art in the social and rural heritage, far removed from Parisian salons. A tireless hunter and walker, Courbet painted wildlife, particularly deer in the snow, with a rare empathy for the animal world. His political involvement during the Paris Commune led to his exile, but his legacy remains etched in the cliffs of Ornans, now home to the Courbet Museum. His modern vision paved the way for Impressionism by placing direct observation of nature at the center of creation.
