GR®430 Saint Regis Way

The GR®430 long-distance hiking trail pays homage to Jean-François Régis, the "Father of the Poor," a 17th-century Jesuit who traversed these rugged lands to evangelize and bring aid to rural populations after the Wars of Religion. The vast basalt plains of the Haute-Loire and the wooded valleys of the Ardèche Verte offer panoramic views of the Alps and the Mézenc massif. Heritage is omnipresent along the route: Romanesque churches, majestic abbeys such as Saint-Chaffre in Le Monastier, and sturdy granite houses with slate roofs. The region also boasts remarkable biodiversity, featuring high-altitude meadows rich in spring flora and dense forests teaming with wildlife. Nicknamed the apostle of Velay and Vivarais, Saint Jean-François Régis left an indelible mark on these mountains.
