GR®302 Source and gorges of the Loire
From Lafarre to Aurec-sur-Loire (Haute-Loire)

The GR302 trail follows the Loire River's transformation, which here is still a mountain torrent rushing through steep, unspoiled gorges. It is marked by the volcanic activity of the Velay region, where the river has carved its bed through basalt and granite, creating landscapes of sheer cliffs and basalt plateaus. Numerous medieval castles overlook the narrow defiles, such as Arlempdes, the first Loire Valley castle perched atop its rocky outcrop, and Lavoûte-Polignac. Nature reigns supreme and is protected here, providing an ideal habitat for the short-toed eagle and the European otter. Descending towards Aurec-sur-Loire, the terrain becomes slightly gentler, but the trail retains its rugged character, alternating between pine forests, broom heaths, and pebble beaches.
