This route is one of the oldest pilgrimage paths to Santiago de Compostela, offering a natural and wild alternative to the Via Tolosana. Historically, this route was a major commercial and spiritual artery from the Middle Ages onward, allowing travelers and pilgrims to cross the Pyrenees before reaching the Somport Pass. Built heritage is omnipresent: from Romanesque churches nestled in charming villages to the shepherds' huts (cayolars) dotting the summer pastures, testaments to a still vibrant pastoral tradition. After leaving the verdant foothills, hikers descend into beech and fir forests before emerging into the high valleys dominated by the iconic silhouette of the Pic du Midi d'Ossau. Nature reigns supreme here, protected in part by the Pyrenees National Park, where it is not uncommon to spot Pyrenean chamois or griffon vultures.
