Salagou Lake is an artificial lake created in 1969 by the construction of a dam on the Salagou River. The dam was built to control flooding and provide water for irrigation and drinking water supply. The history of the Salagou region dates back millions of years. The ocher hills which surround the lake are the result of the erosion of a large massif formed at the end of the primary era. These very fine red sandstones left footprints of reptiles that lived here 250 million years ago in a tropical climate. Carp, pike and perch are found in the lake.
