Tour of Porquerolles Island (Var) |
Starting from the colorful village of Porquerolles, the coastal path winds between white sand beaches, such as the famous Plage d'Argent, and steep cliffs to the south. The island's military heritage is evident, with Fort Sainte-Agathe overlooking the Hyères harbor and a reminder of centuries of coastal defense. Venturing inland, hikers pass through renowned vineyards and olive groves protected by the Port-Cros National Park. The island's history is also inextricably linked to the patronage of François-Joseph Fournier, who gifted the island to his wife in 1912, thus preserving its wild character. Today, biodiversity reigns supreme: the song of cicadas accompanies walks beneath maritime pines and fragrant eucalyptus trees. Between the imposing lighthouse and the Carmignac Foundation dedicated to contemporary art, the island offers a perfect balance between culture and nature.
Porquerolles island was occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Saracens and Genoese. In the 15th century, the island was attached to France. It became private property in the 18th century and was purchased by the Marquis de Forbin. Today, the island of Porquerolles is a French commune in the Var. The island is home to a variety of birds, including gulls, cormorants, gulls, hawks, herons and storks. The island's vegetation is dominated by pine forests, cork oaks and scrub. There are also olive groves, vineyards and fruit and vegetable fields.
