Tour of the Crozon Peninsula (Finistère) |
Starting from Crozon, this loop around the peninsula of the same name offers a wild condensed version of Finistère, where steep cliffs defy the Atlantic. The trail first leads to Morgat and its sea caves, before skirting the Cap de la Chèvre, a protected natural area with endless heathland. Near Camaret-sur-Mer, the military heritage is prominent with Vauban's Tour Dorée and the megalithic alignments of Lagatjar, witnesses to a thousand-year history. Heading back towards Roscanvel and Lanvéoc, the landscape offers breathtaking views of Brest harbor and its coastal fortifications. The route then branches off towards Landévennec, famous for its 5th-century abbey nestled in a bend of the Aulne River with its remarkable microclimate. The return to Saint-Nic allows you to walk alongside vast stretches of fine sand beaches, where nature transforms into dunes bathed in sunlight.
The Crozon peninsula, a veritable stone cross thrust into the Atlantic in the heart of Finistère, offers one of the wildest faces of Brittany. Its vertiginous cliffs, like those of Cap de la Chèvre, overlook the turquoise waters of the Iroise Sea, sheltering low-lying moors of heather and gorse. Maritime and military heritage is omnipresent, from Vauban's fortifications at Camaret-sur-Mer to the mysterious megalithic alignments of Lagatjar. Nature is protected within the Armorique Regional Natural Park, where the GR34 coastal path winds its way between secluded coves and rocky headlands like Pen-Hir. Between the sea caves of Morgat and the old fishing ports, the history of tuna boats intertwines with the Celtic legends of Douarnenez Bay. It is a unique geological territory, where the minerals tell the story of millions of years of erosion in the face of the ocean's onslaught.
